Variations: Dark Sun Campaign Setting
Rules Knowledge: Useful
Game Content: Mature Themes

A Good Omens Production! Caught out in the desert with limited supplies, your small band must endure and survive the horrors of the desert. Can you make it back in one piece?

Dark Sun is a campaign setting for the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game. Set on the desert world of Athas, Dark Sun is about the struggle for survival.

Nine city-states cling to life in the Tablelands. Until recently, they were ruled by powerful Sorcerer-Kings, both tyrants and protectors. Now, only five remain; the other cities are cast into chaos and violent strife. Soon, the desert may swallow them, as it has so many times before. The wastes are riddled with the ruins of cities long dead.

It is a world where magic drains the very essence of life. Ancient wars have left vast swaths of the planet sterile; even now, druids fight a losing battle to preserve the environment. To practice magic is to tempt death at the hands of the mob, yet the cities themselves are ruled by the most powerful of defilers. System: Dungeons & Dragons 4.0
Players: 6
Provided: All characters provided by GM
Power Level: 16th
Rules Knowledge: Useful
Game Content: Mainstream

Long and long ago, when the fabled empires of Arkhosia and Bael Turag had fallen, The Gods walked the land, looking for new worshippers to build their temples and sing their praises

It happened that the Goddesses Iuoun and Melora, on the same day, came upon a tribe of humans building a nameless city beside a great bay. The two saw immediately the potential of the settlement and vied to become its Patroness. Fearing a Godly conflict, the wisest of the humans suggested a simple contest: each goddess would give the city a gift, and one of the gifts would be judges the better.

The Goddesses agreed. Ioun whispered a Word into a crack in the earth, and a olive tree grew from it, she gifted the men with the knowledge to make its bitter fruit edible, and use its oil to illuminate their lamps so they could study her wisdom into the night. Melora stood in the surf and spoke a Word to the sea, and a pair of horses galloped from the waves. She showed the men how to harness and tame them.

Melora’s gift was judged the best and the city was named Melorca in her honor. For centuries, as Nerath rose and fell, Melorca stood as a beacon of wisdom and prosperity. Her fleets of ships rode the waves, trading and collecting tribute from distant lands.

But, time changes all things, and the people of Melorca slowly forgot their devotion to the Goddess. Dagon, scheming in the lightless depths of the Abyss exerted his influence and his cult grew up in the shadows.

A century ago, the Temple of Melora in Melorca, a magnificent structure built upon a small island in the bay sank beneath the waves. A symbol of her disappointment in her chosen people. With it went the Tide Ebbing and Tide Flowing Pearls, powerful artifacts that had long kept the city safe.

Prophesy says that today, at the lowest tide, the Temple shall rise from the waves again, and, if the Pearls are rescued before the turning of the tide, the city will be saved. If not, the wrath of the Goddess will not be stayed.
You feared the worst when your debtor and small-time Kingpin of the West, Billy the Club, called it time to collect on your debt to him. The five other debtees seemed just as thrilled by the options presented to all of you: protect Billy’s whiskey and cigarette trucks from the Pavement Snakes and most likely die, or die. Armed with small-time weapons, fast cars, hot women and warm beer, you and 5 strangers set out down the lonely, dusty roads to Lost Vegas for the sake of the whiskey. But no matter where that road takes you, if you can’t remember the stops, you must of had a good time.
octaNe is best described in Jared Sorensens own words: “The psychotronic game of post-apocalyptic trash-culture America.” Sinnin’ is played using the Grindhouse option and focuses heavily on storytelling. With simple mechanics and a talent for flair and over-the-top awesomeness, octaNe captures everything that is good about bad cinema. Bring your bad junk food and get ready to tell a sexy and violent Grindhouse tale of bad whiskey, hot cars, and Rock N’ Roll.

HoweverJust before reaching the halfway point of Haven, The Owl was pursued and captured by the Imperial cruiser Hand of Sorrow, under charges of flying a false flag. 878 A.D.The Kingdom of Wessex.

The dragon banners of King Alfred have defeated the Viking/Danish forces at Ethandun, making their leader, Guthrum the Unlucky, bend the knee and receive baptism as a sign of his goodwill. Wessex was fortunate to have won Ethandun as it was a close battle. If they had lost then Wessex likely would have turned into a Danish colony and Alfred’s dream of a united England (which still didn’t exist at the time) would have never been.

During this peaceful time a group of fledgling investigators are given leave to go on holiday. One of the investigators has an invitation to a village wedding and he’s gracious enough to invite the other investigators along. But holidays aren’t always what they’re expected to be and dark forces could be at work that make certain Alfred’s dream of a united England never come to fruition.

This is an introductory adventure for Cthulhu Dark Ages. Those unfamiliar with Cthulhu should consider it something of the opposite of Dungeons & Dragons. Think gritty investigators up against horrors that are usually defeated with cunning. Brawn will usually get you killed. This game contains mature themes.

I’ve been thinking about the con a lot as of late. Honestly, I probably been over thinking it, but that is just my OCD nature kicking in. Because of the shuffler this year has been different from the last two. To talk meaningfully about it I need to start with a little history.

About eight months ago a gaggle of Good Omens GMs got together to play games, eat food, and talk shop about Good Omens Con 3. Overall, we had been really happy with the last two conventions, but some of us received complaints that the games (which at that time were first come, first serve) filled up instantly and players couldn’t get in. Part of this we realized was our own fault. Good Omens GMs (including yours truly) had signed up for our own games. It makes sense, we like each other, we want to play with each other… but it meant less space for everyone else. So that was our first change. Unless there is a no show and someone needs to fill a seat, you won’t see any members of Good Omens playing in any of our games. Which means, again, more room for you.

The big systematic change though, was adopting a shuffler. It is the only way to ensure that everyone would have a chance to get into the game they wanted. To keep our sanity and to still allow for last minute sign ups, we opted to close the shuffler on July 1st and then allow anyone else to fill up the open spots in a first come, first serve basis. This seemed (at the time) to have all our bases covered.

Well, now it is 7/11, a week away from the con. The shuffler is closed and all the results are emailed. Or at least all of the results you might expect have been emailed. But I have some findings of my own, based on my experience that I want to share.

Not everyone loves the shuffler. As soon as it was announced, I received a letter from a long time player who essentially said that he couldn’t make plans to come to Oakland for the day if he didn’t know whether or not he was going to get in a game. Hmm… I hadn’t thought about that one. Yeah, if you don’t find out till after 7/1, it does make it hard for people who have to travel a long ways or have to make arrangements for child care to attend an event on 7/18. So, just as the old system has detractors, so does the new.

Some games are really popular. I mean really popular. This isn’t meant to toot my horn (or anyone else’s in particular) but we have games that literally had three times as many people who tried to get in as the game could support. This is really only data that I could have collected with a shuffler. Otherwise, with the old system, as soon as a game was full we’d never know about the silent demand that didn’t bother emailing because the game already showed zero seats open. What does this mean? Should we run some games twice? Should we move to a four hour slot instead of six? Should we look at making Good Omens Con a two day event instead of just one? I’m not sure about any of these, but this information has got be thinking all of those possibilities.

I don’t like telling people “no”. It’s not like I didn’t know that before, but his system really highlights the fact that you have to tell some people “Sorry, you didn’t get into any games”. It’s even worse when someone didn’t pick a second and third choice (or if they picked the same game for all three choices). The system essentially tries to get you in your first choice of game, but if you don’t make it tries to get you in your second choice, etc. So if you only made a first choice and didn’t get in, the shuffler didn’t have any other options for you. I shook the magic gumball machine several times looking for outcomes that didn’t involve “no game for you” answers but there were always some. As is, every seat is filled, which means the fewest possible people were turned away. Still it makes me sad to even have to do that.

Drop outs create an interesting ripple effect. One benefit of the shuffler is that once the results are tallied and we email everyone it becomes a second confirmation that they didn’t get before. They get a “hey, remember this game you signed up for a month ago… well you’re in!” email. The advantage of this is that if something has come up and they can’t make it, this serves as a reminder to let us know, so we can allocate their seats to other people who previously didn’t get into a game. Note to all of you who can’t make it but haven’t told us: Please let us know; there are others who want your seat! (smiley faces of levity attached)

So that’s it for now. If I have any other amazing revelations, I’ll post more about it in the forums. If you have a moment to share your thoughts, please go to the forums and do so. I’d love to hear them and they will definitely affect our decisions as we plan for GO Con 4 next year.

See you in a week!

Everything had been going according to plan. You acquired a invitation to Prince Jurian ir’Wynarn’s ball in Wroat (the capitol of Breland), an appropriate Aundairian masquerade costume, and managed to infiltrate the secure vault in order to gain the marble griffon statuette you came for.. all without alerting Lord Ruken ir’Clarn’s household guards.
